Abstract

In August 2019, South Sulawesi experienced inflation of 0.36 percent with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 138.99. Of the 5 CPI cities in South Sulawesi, four cities (Bulukumba, Watampone, Makassar and Parepare) experienced inflation while Palopo City experienced deflation. The highest inflation occurred in Watampone City by 0.72 percent with CPI value of 134.96 while deflation occurred in Palopo City by 0.02 percent with CPI of 136.35.

• Inflation that occurred in South Sulawesi in August 2019 was caused by rising prices in six expenditure groups as indicated by rising consumer price index (CPI) in the education, recreation and sports group (1.54%); foodstuffs group (0.72%); clothing group (0.72%); housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group (0.09%); transportation, communication and financial services group (0.06%); processed foods, beverages, cigarettes, and tobacco group (0.04%); meanwhile the health expenditure group experienced deflation (0.14%).

• The calendar year inflation rate (January-August 2019) of South Sulawesi is 2.28 percent and the year on year inflation rate (August 2019 to August 2018) is 2.84 percent.
