Abstract

In July 2019, South Sulawesi experienced a deflation of 0.05 percent with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 138.50. Of the 5 CPI cities in South Sulawesi, four cities (Bulukumba, Watampone, Palopo, and Parepare) experienced deflation while the city of Makassar experienced inflation. The highest deflation occurred in Parepare City at 0.48 percent with a CPI value of 131.97 while the lowest deflation occurred in Bulukumba by 0.07 percent with CPI of 144.06.

 • This deflation in South Sulawesi in July 2019 was caused by falling prices in the two expenditure groups as indicated by the decline in the consumer price index (CPI) in the foodstuffs group (0.73%) and the transportation, communication and financial services group (0 , 27%); while the other five expenditure groups experienced inflation, the clothing group (1.25%); education, recreation and sports group (0.54%); processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco groups (0.28%); health group (0.19%); and housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel groups (0.04%).

 • The inflation rate for the calendar year (January-July 2019) in South Sulawesi was 1.92 percent and the year-on-year inflation rate (July 2019 against July 2018) was 2.37 percent.
